Be an Advocate for Community Wellness

In 1985, it was determined that a 4% excise tax on liquor sales in Michigan would be invested in addiction treatment and prevention programs. Over the years, the funds from this liquor tax have provided thousands of students with training to help them make healthy decisions and prevent substance abuse. These funds also allow individuals to get treatment for substance use illness who can not get treatment through other means. But now our leaders in Lansing are planning to raid this fund to help address the Michigan State budget crises. Based on what is invested in substance use prevention and treatment, Michigan already ranks in the bottom 10% in its commitment to wellness and prevention. If this isn’t acceptable to you, let your legislators know it! Contact your local representatives and tell them not to raid the liquor tax fund. Click here to find your representative.

Substance use disorders and mental illness are healthcare issues. For too long these issues have been diminished as minor social problems. But in reality, they are diseases of the brain and need to be considered just like any other chronic disease in order to affect the systemic change needed for everyone to have access to the help they need.
