Yo Puedo Grows Good People and Good Food
Yo Puedo is a substance abuse prevention program with a primary focus Latino teens. It is one of Life Guidance Services Wellness and Prevention programs. With support from the Sebastian Foundation, Yo Puedo participants recently transformed a vacant lot used for gang activity, into a productive community garden. The high school students worked over the summer to grow corn, peppers, cilantro, and other crops that were shared with neighbors. In the process, they also grew greater self-confidence. Tenth-grader Claudia Yacuta explains, “Working in the garden made me feel good about helping others who couldn’t afford to buy vegetables.”
